South Africa is one of our favourite safari destinations for families. The infrastructure is superb, the possibilities are endless and the prices are good compared with other parts of Africa. South Africans are hugely accommodating and welcoming to families especially, and it’s often our first choice for a family safari.
Horseback Riding in Waterberg
One of the up and coming safari regions is the Waterberg, located about three hours north of Johannesburg and easily accessible in a self drive vehicle from the N1 highway.
I took my family last summer, and we spent two incredible days on horseback, riding right up to the animals, which are fearless of the horses. The riding is suitable for all levels – beginners will be allocated horses that will only walk, while more advance riders can trot or canter, or if they wish, even gallop through the bush with their guides. The reserves where riding is allowed do not have large predators or elephants, so there is no fear of running into any scary animals. They do have rhinos and buffalo, but riders are kept well away from these animals.
We loved riding past giraffe, zebra and all kinds of antelope. The rhinos are acually kept close to the owners house for safety (there is a crazy amount of poaching of rhinos in South Africa) and guests can watch the rhinos being fed every night – they are only about 2 meters away! The buffalo are fed as well and one can participate in the feeding, as you throw feed from the back of a truck.
Riding amongst the wildife is a special experience – wonderfully family friendly and something recommended for all!
