Family time in the Canyon
From the North Rim, we continued to Lake Powell in Page, AZ. The drive was amazing – past Vermillion Cliffs National Monument, and then a stop at Lees Ferry, to see the staging point for the rafting trips through the Grand Canyon. This is still something we need to do one day – it looks incredible. We couldn’t believe how much stuff was being stacked into the rafts! The few houses built into the rocks were very strange!
Lake Powell is beautiful. Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to take a day long boat trip on the lake,, but we did find some secluded beaches and had great swims. The highlight of this region came the next day.
A slot canyon is formed by flooding waters in the desert over time. Just outside Page is Antelope Canyon, the best known and easiest to reach slot. It’s also the most touristed. For once, I was very happy to be on the beaten track. Slots can be dangerous – people have died while in canyons during flash floods, and I was happy to be visiting somewhere well-known, with guides around. There are two sections – upper and lower – we visited upper and the kids were completely spellbound – it didn’t really matter that there were so many tourists about – the short walk through the canyon was incredible and we had a great guide. True, it was busy – but it would have been crazy to miss it.
